meant to explore some sort of evolution or cycle. So I chose one of the coolest cycles I could think of: the periodic cycle of the 13 and 17 year cicadas. The goal was to take a few pieces from their collection and reimagine how a collection could be represented. During the process of finding artwork I was inspired by the fantasy and misrepresentation of subjects in several paintings and decided to create some sort of fiction in order to contain these “fakes”. I settled on creating the setting of a department store that sells you misrepresentations and built a brand around it. In this project I explored the potential of the potato, both to nourish and keep one alive or to rot and kill. Potatoes are incredibly nutritious. If someone was increbibly taken by the idea, they could survive on potatoes alone for a surprisingly long amount of time. They also produce an incedibly deadly neurotoxin gas if not stored properly and left to rot. I wanted to give a fair account of both of these extremes of the potato and craft an graceful, elegant aesthetic around this information that contradicts the potatoes dopey form. I used it to fuel and flesh out my love of national and state parks. The icons I developed were for the five major biomes of the United States (Deserts, Grasslands, Temperate Forests, Taiga, and Tropical Forest) and the flora and fauna one can typically find within them. What is its structure and form? How can we begin to visualise such a common yet abstract notion? Some thinkers have come up with their own ideas of how they believe one should picture a narrative, i.e. Kurt Vonnegut’s clever graphs plotting the good or ill fortune of characters over time and Joseph Campbell’s famous, circular Hero’s Journey. These two, and a good handful of others interested in storytelling, have mapped out how a story is built, piece by piece. But their visualisations, while a handy place to start, are typically pretty rigid in their application. STORY SHAPE was an attempt to provide a more freeing idea of narrative visualisation. A story doesn’t follow some monolithic formula. Stories vary from culture to culture, person to person, from telling to telling. The shapes of those stories should change just as much. So when someone interacted with Story Shape they were asked to lend their own background and their own experience.
